Start at the right moment, and the whole process feels exciting instead of stressful. Wait too long, and you're suddenly rush-ordering a gown three weeks before your wedding while everyone around you sweats more than you do.

12+ Months Out: Dream Big, Then Book Us

This is the fun part. Make the Pinterest board. Make three Pinterest boards. Screenshot every dress on every bridal Instagram you follow (yes, including ours — @bocaratonbridal @bocaratonbridalsouth. Let yourself get a little obsessed.

While you're dreaming, start getting familiar with designers, because knowing what you're drawn to makes your first appointment ten times more productive. We carry Arava Polak, Essense of Australia, Martina Liana, Stella York, Galia Lahav, Casablanca Bridal, Sareh Nouri, Verdin Bridal, and Eve of Milady, so whether you're into romantic lace, sleek modern lines, or full ballgown drama, there's a whole world to fall in love with under one roof.

The part people always underestimate: most wedding gowns are made-to-order and can take 4-6 months to arrive from the designer. That's before alterations even start. So booking your first appointment 9-12 months before your wedding isn't us being dramatic, it's genuinely how you avoid a stress spiral later.

9-10 Months Out: Say Yes and Place the Order

This is the appointment. You try on gown after gown, your people are crying in the corner, and then it happens, that moment where you look in the mirror and just know. Our stylists live for this. Ask any bride who's walked out of here (our team has heard "this is the one" more times than they can count, and it never gets old for them).

Once you've said yes:

• We'll place your order with the designer right then and there.
• We'll walk you through the delivery timeline so you know exactly when to expect your gown.
• We'll talk dress fittings, we do all of our alterations in-house; but if you need a seamstress recommendation, we've got trusted ones we send brides to.

A little styling wisdom from us: If you're getting married outdoors in Florida heat, a lighter fabric like chiffon or crepe is going to be your best friend. If you're going for a ballroom moment, structured satin or Mikado holds its shape beautifully and photographs like a dream. And if you're planning a destination wedding, look for gowns with detachable sleeves or trains, so you get the drama for photos and the ease for actually dancing later.

Pro tip: We also run Trunk Shows throughout the year where you can see a designer's newest collection before anyone else.

6-8 Months Out: Now We Accessorize

Your gown is ordered. Deep breath. Now comes the genuinely fun part: building the whole look.

This is your window to shop veils, hairpieces, shoes, and undergarments, and to schedule your hair and makeup trial. It's also the perfect time to work in something sentimental, your grandmother's brooch, a "something blue" stitched into your hem, whatever makes the dress feel unmistakably yours.

A few accessory ideas we love pulling for our brides:

• A cathedral veil with delicate lace trim, for that walk-down-the-aisle moment everyone will remember.
• Pearl drop earrings or a headband, especially gorgeous with high-neck or minimalist gowns.
• And please, for the love of your feet, bring backup shoes for the dance floor. Nobody regrets bridal sneakers at 11pm.

This time is also best to coordinate what your bridal party will be wearing. More often than not, brides don’t realize that finding their bridesmaids’ dresses also takes a lot of coordination and planning. These dresses also need adequate time to get ordered, arrive, and also get altered if needed.

3 Months Out: Alterations Time

Cue the happy tears, your gown has arrived! This is when it goes from "beautiful dress on a hanger" to "beautiful dress that was made for your actual body."

What to expect:

• We’ll call you as soon as your gown arrives in store, and schedule a time for you to come in and try on your dress for the first time and pay any remaining balance (aka a “Visit Gown & Pay” appointment).
• After your Visit Gown & Pay appointment, we’ll schedule your alterations appointments (unless you’re getting them done elsewhere).
• Bring your wedding shoes and the undergarments you'll actually wear on the day (seriously, don't skip this).
• Most brides need 3 fittings to get everything perfect.

Fit priorities depend on your silhouette. Ballgowns need attention to bust support and waist definition. Sheath and column gowns live and die by the hem and side seams. A-line gowns are all about that sweet spot between structure and comfort.

Our alterations team and managers will be with you every step of the way during your alterations appointments, ensuring that your dress not only fits you perfectly, but makes you feel confident and bridal. 

And don't be surprised if this is when it really hits you. We've had brides tear up the second the zipper goes up and they see themselves in the mirror, fully fitted, for the first time. That's a normal reaction. Bring tissues. Bring your mom. Bring both. Most of all, bring your shoes!

Month Of: Final Fitting and Pickup

This is it. Your dress is ready, and so are you.

At your final appointment, try on your entire look, dress, veil, shoes, jewelry, all of it, from head to toe. Walk around. Sit down. Do a little twirl. Comfort matters just as much now as it did on day one, so if anything feels off, this is your last chance to flag it.

Once you take your gown home, resist the urge to hang it in your closet for the next few weeks. Delicate fabrics can stretch or distort on a regular hanger. Lay it flat or use a padded hanger somewhere it won't get bumped, brushed, or introduced to a curious pet.

Wedding Week: You Made It

Look at you. All that planning, all that dreaming, and it's finally here.

Our advice for wedding week: hand off the steaming and transport to someone you trust completely (not you, not the day of), lay every single piece of your outfit out the night before, and then just breathe. You've done the work. Now you get to actually enjoy it.

I don't have a full year, what do I do? Come see us anyway. We work with plenty of brides on shorter timelines and can point you toward rush-ready and off-the-rack gowns that still feel completely you. 

When should I shop for my veil and accessories? While we do recommend to our brides that they find their dress and veil altogether,  6-8 months out is the sweet spot, early enough to bring them to your fittings, late enough that your gown is already ordered.

Can alterations really transform a dress that much? Yes. Whether or not your dress is off-the-rack, or just arrived from the designer warehouse, a skilled seamstress can take a beautiful gown and make it look custom-built for you. It happens here all the time.
